Caring for your artwork

Look at what makes up The Blueprint.

In The Blueprint, I bring lips, hair textures, Blue Magic, Air Force 1s, and durags into the same painting.

I painted them across a blue grid, with space to move from one detail to the next. Look at the textures beside the familiar objects: the hair, the fabric, the shoes, the jar. Each one gives you a different way into the piece.

Cultural context · From the archive

The care behind the style.

Hair is one of the threads running through The Blueprint. This photograph takes us to Detroit in February 1942: a girl arranging her hair in a bedroom mirror. An everyday moment of care, preserved decades before the products and sneakers pictured in the painting.

The history reaches beyond a single brand. Black beauty entrepreneurs built businesses around the needs of their communities, from hair care and cosmetics to salons and schools. That history gives the familiar objects in this painting a wider context.

Make room for the details.

When you look at my painting, start with the detail you recognize first. Then follow the grid and see what else catches your eye. The lips, hair, and everyday objects are all part of the same composition.

Choose your size above. A canvas gives the piece depth on the wall; a satin print leaves the choice of frame to you.
